History

In 1977 there was a meeting of 5 people to arrange and plan a celebration for the Queen's Silver Jubilee. It was decided that we hold a Fancy Dress parade through the Village, adults and children participated and a simple buffet meal was organised in the school. The oldest man and woman resident in the village led the procession. They were carried on a vehicle provided by the local haulage contractor who is still offering their services to the community. Thankyou to the Hollingworth family.

We also held a swimming gala at Scissett baths.

After the success of this venture, it was decided that we form a committee under the chairmanship of Mr H. Lockwood to arrange this as an annual event. The procession of floats was paraded through the village before returning to the school. This route has recently had to be curtailed as the A635 road has become too hazardous to allow the passage of slow moving vehicles and accompanying pedestrians. The Carnivals (as they have now been named) have been held on the school field, which is open to all that the elements can throw at us. One year the weather forced everyone indoors to the school and although cramped this engendered a great show of community spirit. The following year it was decided that we hire a small marquee, this was possible due to a donation from Hepworth Iron Co. and over the years this has become larger and more ambitious. Thankyou Hepworth Building Products for your continuing support!

In 1992 the Carnival Committee of Lower Cumberworth ceased due to lack of local support and the decision was made that the two villages combine for social events. Due to this we changed the name of the Association to "Cumberworth Community Association" much to the confusion of the Charity Commissioners.

The present Carnival is much enlarged, although we still maintain the tradition of featuring a local brass band, there are now games, stalls, visiting stalls, exhibitions and the attendance of  a local radio station. "Mr Gee Whizz" continues to be our compere and mainstay of the afternoon. The day ends with a disco and entertainment in the marquee.
