Upper Cumberworth is located between the villages of Denby Dale and Shepley Set in beautiful countryside consisting of open field and woodland, but, also has great access to major roads and motorways. The 2001 Census has the population of Upper and Lower Cumberworth at 1,222. Parts of Upper Cumberworth lie within a conservation area.
The Upper Dearne Woodlands is managed and cared for by the Upper Dearne Woodlands Conservation Group. The woodland is fantastic for walkers and provides many interesting flora and fauna to see during your walk. One of the most interesting are the 75 Hairy Wood ants nests (latin name Formica Lugubris)
Upper Cumberworth has one school and one pub, the Star Inn. It also has a shop which also provides the village with its own post office. The village also has and Anglican Church, St Nicholas's, which has in its churchyard and set of old stocks. Now only used on rare occasions when members of the committee step out of line! There is also a small childrens' playground and also a recreation ground, just off Eunice Lane, recently improved by Kirklees Council providing climbing equipment and basketball facilities.
Although the community association provide lots of different events throughout the year, they have annual events which include the carnival, held in the first Saturday in July, with an evening disco with local bands. Also a village bonfire is held every year on bonfire night (regardless of the weather!) with a fantastic firework display.
Both Lower and Upper Cumberworth have a combined cricket team and football teams including teams from the age of 6 upwards.
